The Basic Guides On Buying A Fine Gemstone Jewelry

By Olive Pate

The jewelry market can be challenging particularly for those who are buying them for the first time. To begin with, diamond rings, necklaces and bangles rank as the most valuable fine gemstone jewelry. For those who don't have a taste for diamond and those cannot simply afford one, there are many other gemstones such as Blue Topaz, Aquamarine, Tanzanite, Zircon, Garnet, Corundum, Ruby, Sapphire, Quartz, Spinel, Tourmaline, and Emeralds among several others.

Gemstones are available in hundreds of varieties and the process of buying a gemstone or a jewelry that has gemstones is often a hard task. Before you set out to buy one, it will be of great help if you have the some knowledge about the gemstones as well as their characteristics.

As for the hue, the focus is on its base color (shade or tint). The intensity of the base color is described by saturation and the tone is the description for the color depth. Generally, too light or too dark gemstones are not the best ones, instead, choose the one that has a bright, rich, intense and pure color that is also vivid.

It is a term that describes the presence or absence of flaws on the gem surface or inside. It is not easy to find a flawless stone and is therefore very expensive. Other than diamond, the value of other gemstones is not much affected by these flaws except when the inclusions and minerals can affect its durability. The flaws can be seen from through a magnifying glass or microscope.

The gems also come in different cuts and according to experts, polishing or cutting is determined by the color. For optical efficiency, shallow cuts are used for highly saturated colors while deep cuts help increase the vividness of the less saturated ones. The common cuts include Table, Square, Brilliant, Rose, Cabochon, Step, Emerald, and Triangular.

The other important aspect is carat weight. Since the gems are sold depending on their weight and not their size, the heavier ones are likely to cost more than the lighter ones. Generally, it is your budget that determines the carat you choose. However, you are better off buying an average sized gem that has quality cut, clarity and color than choosing a larger one that sacrifices color, clarity and cult.

The other important tip is the treatment or enhancement used. The enhancement is done improve the appearance in terms of its color and clarity and may also enhance durability. It may be done by oiling, dying, heating, waxing, bleaching or irradiating among other methods. As such, determine if it is natural or treated and if treated then determine the method used. Determine if special care is required and if the treatment affects its durability.

The last consideration to have in mind is the enhancement or treatment. The natural gems are more attractive and tend to cost more. However, if the gemstone is treated or enhance, then try to find out the method of treatment used, and if the treatment is temporary or permanent and if there is any special care required.
