Upgrading With Custom Wire Wheels

By Richard Morgan

One of the easiest and most effective ways to change the appearance of a vehicle is to fit custom wire wheels for cars. Whether your car is fitted with standard steel rims with covers or alloys, fitting a set of aftermarket wheels can improve its looks dramatically. There are many companies all over the world that can supply wire wheels and there are a few things to consider beforehand.

Many stores and internet companies will stock standard off the shelf sets for the most popular models. These differ in color, style and size and there is an option for any budget. There are thousands of styles to choose from and it is important to select the right one for the vehicle.

If the buyer does not want to spend a large sum of money there is always the option of buying a pre owned set of wire wheels. From as little as 300 dollars per set a lot of these can be fitted immediately although many will require attention or restoration. For approximately 60 dollars per rim they can be re chromed or powder coated in any color. Some of the spokes may also need attention and this is also reasonably priced.

At the higher end of the market a handmade set of wire wheels can be purchased. Depending on size, finish and number of spokes these start at around 2000 dollars per set, increasing in price according to specification. The blade spinners or center caps used to secure the wheel can also be custom made an original design.

When opting to buy and fit a set of wire wheels it is advisable to do a little homework regarding the vehicle. Enough clearance will be needed if fitting bigger rims and other items such as suspension and brakes may need modification depending on the model of car. A mechanic or motor factor will be able to give advice on these matters.

When fitting a new set it is also important to check that the correct tools are also purchased and kept in your vehicles tool kit. Because many sets will have a spinner or single nut to secure it the original tools supplied with the car will not fit if the need arises to change the wheel at the roadside. Many suppliers will provide tools when purchasing new rims but it is worth checking beforehand in case they have to be brought separately.

After care is also a factor when deciding on upgrading and changing to spoked wire rims. Washing and polishing can be a laborious task and not as simple as cleaning a standard steel or alloy wheel. Soft brushes, old rags and so on can be used for the more inaccessible areas where a sponge or pressure washer may not get to. It will also be necessary from time to tome to remove the rims to inspect and clean behind to avoid any corrosion and to make a routine check on condition.

Before purchasing the new wheels it is well worth talking to a mechanic to make sure any modifications are done properly and also to work out the costs. If buying online be aware that you may not get the after sales service that would be provided with a local retailer. Also it is worth holding on to the original set should the car be sold or traded.
