Honeywell is one of the largest manufacturers of aircraft engines and avionics in the world. The company headquarters are located in Phoenix, Arizona, and the business generates more than ten billion dollars of revenue every year. It was founded by John Garrett in 1963. Today, it has several patents for NextGen technology, turbochargers and aircraft windshields. They also receive a lot of revenue from commercial contracts and defense contracts, many with the United States government as well as the Government of China. In the 1930s the company added temperature controls to such vehicles as cars, airplanes and trains. This proved more challenging than installing stationary furnaces because the temperature of a plane can change dramatically during its ascent and descent. The company also provided the first nuclear-powered submarine with its air conditioning system in 1954.

When the Second World War began many turbochargers were manually controlled and used mechanical energy to force air from the engine into the intake manifold. When the war ended, the company received approval to invest $1 million in research to develop more advanced turbine engines. This was when the company created its first engine called the black box.

The company is also a founding member of the European SESAR project, which exists to develop air traffic technology for Europe. This project involves trajectory planning and 3-D route planning, which coordinates flight schedules to eliminate flight conflicts. The project also involves the creation of a global navigation satellite system that combines multiple signals to improve accuracy in global positioning. The company is also developing a SmartTraffic airborne system which can detect when other aircraft is getting too close and can suggest evasive maneuvers to avoid collisions.

The aerospace division of the company has been involved in many major space missions over the past few decades. From 1966 to 1967, the company developed an orbital scanner program for NASA. In 1958 the company participated in the Vanguard project, which was the first successful satellite launched from earth by the U. S. In 1963, the company was involved with experiments to use giant balloons to carry cameras to high altitudes in order to study the atmosphere and its effects on photography.

Honeywell avionics has also patented certain voice command systems. These systems can determine if a plane is in a phase of flight that allows voice commands to help interpret the intended commands from ground control.
