Musical Theater Camp Just Might Be Better Than Public School

By Pamela Allen

With so much pressure being put on young people in this day and age, it seems a shame that many parents believe they have to push their kids even further in order to assure their success in life. Parents will frequently get their children into a specialized program so they can master skills that are not commonly held in the general population. Summer programs such as musical theater camp is exactly such a place.

Students with a musical aptitude, such as those who join the school band, can attend these summer programs in order to sharpen their skills with whatever instrument they are specializing in for school. The fact is, very few people are born with an instinctive talent such as Mozart. The majority of people who have musical ability had to be taught the skill.

In bygone days children hated these stuffy summer obligations where they were forced to endure hours of practice while their friends all played baseball and went to the beach. However, if these kids had any notion to make it into an expensive finishing school that specializes in music and performing arts, these programs are vital. With this sort of a head start, these wind up being the people who become the rock stars of tomorrow.

These days it is not uncommon to hear the campers and their counselors say that everyone has some sort of artistic talent which must be discovered within. Once one knows their talent, their guides teach them that they now have a sort of power. Once a child has confidence, their ability to perform in front of others is greatly enhanced.

Counselors twenty or thirty years ago were known to be much harder on the young people under their tutelage. These days kids at camps can be educated in a variety of entertainment-related specialties, sometimes by the celebrities they listen to on their own radio every day. There are very talented people in the world who are quite willing to be a leader in their community.

Students are often given the choice at the beginning of their stay to decide what they wish to focus on for the season. One child may opt to learn an entirely new instrument or style of music. Another child might want to spend the season focusing on dance, acting. Or even mime.

It might seem mean to push young people so hard toward success, but then again, maybe it is not as bad as some of us think. Kids who have taken advantage of these camps, whether they were forced to or went voluntarily, discovered that the things they learned during that time of their lives could not be measured. It opened doors for them to get into places like Broadway and Hollywood.

Now that there are no stuffy counselors trying to force clans of teenagers to play repetitive notes for hours on end, these campers have come to embrace the experience. Every summer they get to look forward to specialized learning at the hands of an established and talented individual. Even the most famous celebrities sometimes take an interest in helping these kids to succeed.
