Characteristics Of African American Christian Fiction Novels

By Richard Barnes

Many different authors are differentiated on their styles of writing. They sell themselves through the writings they pile in their books. To make a good writer who has the market, you need to know the kind of books to write and their required contents. Failure to that, your writing will lack meaning. The following are characteristics of African American Christian fiction novels.

They base the romance on more than physical attraction. Romance brings about love leading to marriage. A holy romance discourages choosing based on physical appearance as it is discrimination. Therefore, romance portrayed in these writings show people who came into marriage as a result of many other things and factors not based on physical appearance only. The author is to show other qualities such as helping and not only to the person one is attracted to but also to others especially the needy. It also discourages romance among a believer and a non-believer as it is also based on physical attraction.

Do not base their stories on revenge and violence. Revenge seeks to do bad to a person believed to hurt another one. Revenge is a sin as it encourages bad actions. Violence, on the other hand, is also ungodly because it inflicts pain, misery and suffers to those believed as enemies. God discourages actions leading to violence and pouring of blood. Hence as an author of such books, you need to avoid the basis of revenge or violence or use of scenes that portray potentiality of the two.

Lack sexual sin glamour. Almost every book that is developed today has a scene concerning sexual sin. This is also common in Christian fiction. Although when used in these books, the author should not glamour it. They need to show how much it is as sin, condemn it and discourage it completely. Every sinful scene that appears inside here should be pointed out and their severe punishments as a result of those who committed it.

Do not use profanity. Profanity is evil and satanic. The author who uses abusive language and a bad word in writing a Christian fiction lacks the morality in them. People write what they are and a writer who uses profanity in their work are themselves profane. You cannot pass what you do not have to people, the same way a writer cannot write what is not in themselves. Therefore the use of profanity shows the author is a non-believer hence mockery to believers.

Believer actors should act in integrity or suffer the consequences. The book requires portraying the consequences of sin that a believer suffered as a result of being immoral. They should show how punishable it is to compromise immoral behavior as a believer. The author should have the ability to portray winning of a believer who stuck to morals rather than winning in compromises.

It has a Christian message. The book should show the teachings that the reader is to learn after reading the book. It should have a meaningful purpose in the life of a believer and its message be based on the moral teachings. The message is what changes the reader.

It has a Biblical basis. These novels are supposed to have their basis from the Bible. Everything the author portrays should point back to the biblical teachings. This shows that the author knows well the kind of book they are writing and does not end up misleading the readers.
