Some Examples Of Intelligent Sea Life That Have Been Observed

By George Hall

Humans are considered the most intelligent animals in the whole world because of the different abilities they possess. They are capable of mental activities that other creatures cannot though there are some that researchers believe have more intelligence than what is initially believed. These are usually observed in the closest cousins of humans which are apes.

This detail is based on the DNA found by researchers on them being similar to humans including their behaviors as well. Land animals though are not the ones only with this intelligence as there are intelligent sea life also that scientists are observing. Knowing the extent their capabilities have is harder because their underwater environment cannot always be visited by individuals.

Continuous modern technology development enables the sea creatures to be observed now that were impossible before. They can set up some surveillance devices and cameras to help in recording these creatures and their daily reactions, activities and habits. Others are capable of utilizing tools even like Tusk fishes that crack open the shell using rocks.

Octopus is another examples which is able to mimic others, find its way at a maze, spread cultural information and solve advance problems. Other types also pick coconut halves that are discarded by villagers, carry them and hide underneath while waiting for the prey. Two shells typically are used in letting them see between its small opening through.

Dolphins are another sample of sea creatures with intelligence and are seen wearing sponges on their noses when catching fishes on rocky areas. Doing this protects their nose from the rocks while searching and chasing prey in those kinds of environment. A few captive dolphins have been tested by painting somewhere in their body they cannot see with markings and they tried seeing it by looking in mirrors and twisting like humans usually do.

Researchers have also documented recently some dolphins helping fishermen during the fall seasons in a particular place. They heard schools of fish towards the local fishermen wading their nets in the water then they signal to the fishermen that the fishes are near by slapping the water. These actions that are cooperating with humans are described as advanced social learning.

Killer whales manifest their intelligence by cooperating in getting their prey like a sleeping seal on a floating ice. The whale who saw it first calls other whales and they line up with their tails towards the seal and beat it up and down to create waves. These waves will wash over the floating ice and would send the seal into the water for them to kill.

Whales have recently been known for their elaborate form of cultural exchange and communication in addition to their intelligence known before. New mating songs each year are composed by the male Humpback whales and popular ones spread gradually to other oceans. This was observed many times during the observation period of ten years.

Knowing other creatures are intelligent too is fascinating specially while observing them do these. This information may help people understand and care for them better. Preserve their environment to preserve them as well.
