Traditionally, two major kinds of driving systems exist. These are right hand and left hand driving systems. Great Britain did the introduction of right hand driving system. The system has been adopted by 52 nations alone since the introduction, which accounts for about 25 percent of the world only. Obviously, the process of converting a vehicle from being a LHD to LHD is a complicated one and costly as well. The process is not limited to mechanics, but also extends to electrical aspects as well. If the vehicle has center-locking electric windows and power-assisted steering, re-installation must be done so that drivers do not feel different from the vehicle that was converted.

There are various aspects the conversion touches, starting with the dashboard. Removal and replacement of dashboard with an LHD one needs to be done. An LHD steering rack assembly should replace the RHD one. One may not replace wiring harness behind the dashboard but can turn it around to suit the new configuration. When converting, there is effect on safety air bags. One must reposition and re-line the brake master cylinder as well.

The wiper motor, pedal assembly, door panels, door mounted electric controls and wiper mechanisms all demand re-lining and repositioning. Access to accessories of the transmission and the engine with the aim of repositioning is aided by removal of the engine and the transmission. Accessories that are supposed to be realigned include AC ducts, blower motor, cables, heat core and wires are all positioned on the firewall.

It is crucial to be aware of some risks linked with the process of converting an automobile from RHD to LHD and the other way round. First and foremost, disengagement of the steering while in motion is possible. This may result in accidents due to the vehicle losing control. No conversion is ever a hundred percent successful. Hence, some error of margin must be expected.

Fatigue failure is also a common problem in converted vehicles. Components that are made by manufacturers are usually resistant to fatigue failure. A great deal of money and time is invested in the production of high quality fatigue resistant parts. However, during conversion, components of lower quality may be used, which may subject the vehicle to fatigue failure.
