A Review Of Instant Self Tan Products And How They Operate On Your Skin

By Haywood Hunter

Instant self tan products are all the rage today. They ensure you get
the greatest fake tan in the face of the earth without subjecting
yourself to harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun, or their artificial
counterparts from artificial tanning beds. Instant self tan products,
or what is simply referred to as sunless tanning products have been in
existence for quite some time now ever since the invention of
cosmetics back in the 60s.

Over the years they have grown in bits and bounds to become the most
preferred way of getting a tan. Technological advancements have also
seen to it that today's instant self tan products provide a more
realistic and natural effect than their original counterparts that hit
the stores during the 60s and early 70s.

This also meant that there is no shortage of instant self tan products
to use for consumers looking to achieve natural tanning results. They
are generally grouped into two: topical instant self tan lotions and
sprays, and tanning pills and tan accelerators meant for swallowing.
Before discussing the topical instant self tan category, there is one
widespread misconception that should be set straight.

Most people often assume that the instant self tan products would
double up as sunscreens. While they do produce a natural tan effect,
it should be made clear that they do not introduce melanin into your
skin, the way alternative tanning methods do. As such, you should
ensure you apply sunscreen each time you go out in the sun so as not
to subject your skin against harmful ultraviolet rays. Besides,
investing in a good quality sunscreen will mean you will end up with
an even, natural tan since it will complement your instant self tan.

The first type of instant self tan that you can avail is the cosmetic
bronzers. They are the most instant self tan product you could ever
get in the market. They are the easiest to use and they wash off
easily with water and soap. Cosmetic bronzers can be availed in form
of powder, lotions, and creams. Note that the tan effect lasts up
until it is washed; hence many people consider it as more of a form of
makeup.

The other category of instant self tan are sunless tanning products
such as mists, creams, sprays and tanning lotions. These are the most
popular because of their miracle-working effect on the skin. Upon
application, the active ingredient Dihydrozyacetone (DHA) interacts
with dead skin cells found on the epidermis to form the darkened
effect.

Once the darkened effect is formed, it can last up to 10 days as the
skin will change color almost immediately. The DHA is FDA approved,
and is simply a colorless sugar that causes the reaction between dead
skin cells and the instant self tan.

With that being said, most people have raised the issue of why the
instant self tan does not last long enough as most people would want
it to. Biologically, the skin has to go through wear and tear through
a natural process of regeneration. During regeneration, the upper skin
layer is shed and replaced with fresh underlying skin layer. This
explains the reason why you might need to use your instant self tan
product of choice more frequently in order to retain the dark tan
effect.
