The Characteristics Of Hydraulic Seals

By Essie Osborn

Hydraulics is a subject the people in the realm of science as well as engineering are concerned about. This is basically the study of the mechanical properties of a liquid. Students are taught during high school and college that liquids are powerful enough to strike down a building made of cement and this is due to pressure. This is the wisdom behind the strategic designing of water containers.

Not just that, even some liquid containers show deformation due to the pressure exerted by liquid molecules. For this, there is a strategic design employed to containers of fluids to counter this characteristic. This is the same in hydraulic systems. That is why engineers and scientists invented a material that could counter the properties of fluids and that is the hydraulic seals.

This material is a soft non metallic objects that looks like a ring. You can commonly see this fixed together with a group of other rings to form a seal with the primary purpose of blocking, or separating fluid with opposite motion applications. For this, it is considered vital to the machinery.

This material is commonly made up of rubber. They are designed to counter the pressure acting on the fluid and its temperature. With this lies the challenge of selecting the appropriate one to be used which can properly adhere to the functions. But the purpose of this is not only limited to preventing leakage but to overcoming very strong pressure and temperature as well.

Hydraulic systems are actually sealed using combined seals which are specialized for a specific purpose. There are actually two specialized seals which are the rod and the piston. The rod is the type that prevents leakage from the cylinder to the outside. On the other hand, the piston is the one in charge of preventing the fluid to flow to the head of the cylinder.

In order to appropriately select the right seal. Here are some guidelines which you can follow. Take note of the range of temperature which it would be dealing with. Then match its tolerance to the system fluid. With this, damage to it would be avoided. Also, take note of the pressure, as well as the speed.

Make sure that when you install it, they fit rightfully. Also, carefully assemble the parts. Aside from that, follow these points. First, ensure that parts are clean and have a smooth surface. Lubricate the seals with the unifying liquid upon its installation and do not forget to check if you are using the appropriate material.

Do not take for granted the speed. This one always goes together with friction which might break the oil film and the seals. This will contribute to the poor performance of the seals.

With this, it is important to know how these properties affect each other. Basically, these three characteristics which are the temperature, pressure, and speed should operate well in order maintain an optimum performance. It has been discussed that with failure of any of these three, there would be a problem with the sealing which will cause unnecessary ruckus. So in order to be safe, it would be best to follow the safety measures.
