By Diane McDonald

When many people are thinking about something to do for the night, they often think about drinking and enjoying friends. This has been popular for a long time. One of the things that is getting more and more popular is an activity that encourages less drinking and more fun. This is, of course, the many places that offer the paint and drink Jersey Shore residents have found that are fun, creative and they can still get a drink or two.

You are able to find these establishments fairly easily. You may be surprised that some of your regular bars or taverns host these parties on various nights. These little classes run about three hours or less. They are less expensive than a regular pub crawl and, being more fun, you can actually remember your night the next morning.

There will be posters hanging on many walls, easily visible, that will tell you about the timing for the next several classes. It will indicate the times and dates. You will also be able to plan your schedule, should you wish to do so, because they will probably be held on the same night of each week.

Other items of interest, listed, is the selection of wine that will be served. The cost of the evening will include everything you need to paint an image and the drinks. Some classes will even offer soda or beer, while a few might offer something stronger.

A little insight into what will happen will help you understand something that many people fear, at first. This is because they can be shown and instructed in doing something they might not have even thought about doing. They may never have had to paint anything other than a wall before.

One of the things about these parties is that everyone is painting the same picture. That means they are following the moderator or class artist. This person may be listed on any announcement poster as well as the times and dates. It is interesting to find out who it will be and in what genre the painting will be. It could be portraiture, local or world scenery, dark humor or even surrealistic.

Classes are set up to run about the same way, each time. The members of this session will come in and look at the picture to be painted as it is displayed in front of the room. They will find an easel and place their canvass on the rail. They will listen to the artist discuss, briefly, the picture and how it came about.

The artist will demonstrate some technique they used to achieve one of the main elements of the picture they are showing. This may be a different brush stroke or the mixing of various colors of pigment. Everyone will watch, learn and have the ability to ask questions. They will then get to work with the artist circulating through the room helping those in need.
