Benefits Of ZDDP Oil Treatment

By Stephen Robinson

Zinc dialkydithiophosphate is a compound usually found in lubrication engine oils. It is usually an additive that is added to the natural or synthetic oils for the purposes of lubrication to the moving parts. The STP, scientifically treated petroleum has been in production for over seventy years since their discovery in the 1940s. There are several advantages of zddp oil treatment that are above and beyond the normal oil lubricants, thus their persistent use for all those years.

The ZDDP treatment helps offer anti-wear agents that help preserve engine moving parts. It helps reduce wear and tear that would have been therefore catastrophic. At engine operation temperatures and pressure many of the engine parts would call a change every day. But with the treated oil, it has more capabilities to protect the engine for it to last long.

The treated oil that has the zinc compound provides better lubrication to the engine moving parts than plain mineral or synthetic oil. Under pressure, the normal oil would breakdown and be lighter in density. But when the zinc dialkydiothiophosphate is added, the density increases and makes the oil more effective under the contact pressure of the moving parts. It also has the zinc metal that acts as the sacrificial wear material and it saves actual metal parts from wearing off.

Friction is the opposing force between two moving parts. This contact parts tend to make a sharp noise while moving which may be unpleasant to the ear. It is therefore important to reduce if not eliminate the noises for the health and safety of human ears. Denser lubricating oils offers the required thickness in between the contact surfaces thus helping reduce the noise and achieving a quieter engine operation.

Oil burns at a point called flush point. At this point due to heat and pressure, it is capable of bursting into a flame and burning. In order to increase both the pressure and temperature of an oil to flush, the treatment makes the oil stabilize at high temperature and avoid thermal breakdown. It also helps raise the viscosity of oil in order to avoid vaporization at very low temperatures.

Corrosion is a chemical process where metals decay. One of the reasons oils are used for lubrication is because they do not support metal corrosion. Since many engine parts are made by steel which is susceptible to rusting, the oils act as guard to inhabit that chemical process. They therefore play a big role in avoiding corrosion of the machine parts. The denser oils usually have better properties of guarding against the corrosion of engine parts.

The cost of treatment of oils with ZDDP is very small since the process itself was discovered in the 1940s where technological advancement was not that advanced. Therefore, it is easier even today to come up with much better and improved treated oils that have been tested and it would be much cheaper. The oils are also produced from a byproduct of crude oil that is easy to acquire and so is zinc metal because it is available in abundance in the earth crust.

The treated oil also has some antioxidants that help in cleaning the engine. They also help keep the oil density and avoid oil-thinning so as to maintain efficiency. They help remove any foreign chemical compound that would undermine the integrity of oil during high pressures and temperature by making other new compounds.
