Luau Waikiki For A Traditional Feast

By Evelyn Walls

On Oahu in the capital city of Honolulu, you can discover the white sandy beaches of Waikiki. This particular beachfront community attracts more than its share of tourists. If you are lucky, you will be one of them. With its public parks, amazing sunsets and bounty of nature at its most amazing, there will more things to do than time will allow. However, you will probably take time to eat every night, so this is one good reason to enjoy a luau Waikiki.

There are several tourist businesses where you can purchase tickets to a luau. They typically offer round trip transportation from the hotel to the festivities. Guests will not have to worry about getting back to the hotel after they have enjoyed a few mai tais. As soon as you arrive, you will be greeted with a beautiful lei made of flowers, shells or kukua nuts. Most luaus next include the imu ceremony.

You may be wondering what an imu is. It is an underground oven that Hawaiians use to cook an entire pig. The meat is steamed for hours making it very tender. At the imu ceremony Hawaiians dressed traditionally for the ceremony pull the cooked pig from the oven and take it to the kitchen for shredding. The ceremony is simple, but guests get a chance see how food is prepared on the islands. Shredded pork, sweet potatoes, fish and poi will be some of the items on the luau menu.

Your luau may include a hukailau which is an ancient way of fishing created by the Hawaiians. All the guests and natives get together to pull a huge net from the sea, which will be full of fresh fish. This is another simple way of demonstrating the culture. Once prepared, the fish will likely be the freshest you have ever eaten.

Mai tai punch will be served to all. For adults, there will be mai tais with alcohol for purchase. The fun really gets started with the Hawaiian revue. This entertainment includes native ceremonies and dances done in full traditional costume. The hulu may be one of these dances, and some guests may want to attempt to hulu. The revue showcases some of the culture and customs of Hawaiian life.

At last, it will be time to eat a feast like you have never seen before. If food is a way to welcome guests, this buffet is one enormous welcome. Like many cultures, Hawaiians use food to give their guests a warm welcome.

Luaus come in a range of prices from a basic package to a deluxe package. The difference in price per reservation is around sixty dollars. If you purchase a deluxe package you may receive a Hawaiian gift made by the locals. If your party is small in number, you might as well go with a deluxe package.

The luscious luau is only one of the many traditions to experience in Hawaii. The United State welcomed Hawaii to the Union in 1959. In return, the breathtaking state and its gracious people continue to welcome visitors to their islands. The beauty of nature is unsurpassed anywhere in the world. Have a wonderful visit to this island paradise.
