When it comes to editing and writing opportunities, there are a number of areas in which those interested in these jobs can work. One of which is that of a Freelance Content Writer or Editor. In most cases, these individuals work on a freelance basis as an Independent Contractor.

Some areas of expertise in which these individuals perform duties include Web Development, Medical Transcription, Legal, Enterprise, Energy, Education, Oil and Gas, Data Entry, Customer Support, Community Organization and Administrative Support. Others may work as technical editors and writers for a number of different consulting or technical firms.

Regardless of the type of environment a writer is working in, there are several skills which are essential to all areas. For example, having an in-depth knowledge of the subject matter, or the ability to research the information is generally required across the board. With all the new trends in technology and other areas, these individuals are often in high demand. When it comes to advertising, there is no shortage of work for content and copywriters. For, these individuals often know how to present ideas in concise messages which appeal to readers.

In most cases, these positions are filled by creative professionals whom have a basic understanding of computer technology and terminology. Depending on the scope of a project, a degree may or may not be required. Regardless, individuals having the ability to use terminology specific to clients, customers and the business are most likely going to make the best writers.

Other skills necessary to be a success include having the knowledge of a number of different tones and writing styles. The proper use of grammar, English and spelling are essential as these are often the most important skills when it comes to writing and editing. Having the ability to work alone for long periods without interruption or supervision is also an important asset.

Being able to understand the desires of a client when it comes to formatting and terminology is essential to completing a project. In many cases, there may be deadlines associated with submitting materials. When this is the case, it is imperative that the individual meet any deadlines on time. If there is an issue, it is imperative that the individual contact the hiring manager and request an extension as soon as possible so that the client can inform others if and when necessary.

Lastly, it is essential that those working in these positions have an in-depth knowledge of word processing and other programs which are often necessary in producing articles, documents and requested information. While some employers will provide SEO keywords and placement instructions, writers can also be required to do so independently. As such, it is necessary to have an understanding of where to place SEO keywords and other information to gain the most response from readership.
